WINTER VACCINATIONS PROGRAMME

Posted on November 24th, 2021

Why should you have both flu and Covid-19 booster vaccines?

This Autumn / Winter both the flu and Covid-19 booster vaccinations are a crucial part to protecting lives, livelihoods and our NHS

Both flu and Covid-19 can be life threatening for some people as well as spread more easily during the winter period. Research highlights how viruses like flu and Covid-19 can develop into more serious illnesses resulting in needing hospital admission. Both vaccines will help reduce the number of people becoming ill as well as protect those most at risk from the worst outcomes. Being vaccinated will also help protect your family, friends and the wider community.

Many patients who are eligible for a Covid-19 booster will also be eligible for a FREE flu jab. Government guidelines were recently extended for Covid-19 booster vaccinations to offer those aged 40 and over a booster vaccination.

It is safe for both vaccines to be administered at the same time if this option is offered to you.

Who is eligible for a FREE flu jab?

  • Those aged 50 and over (including those who will be 50 by 31st March 2022
  • Those living in long-stay residential care
  • Frontline health and social care workers
  • Women who are pregnant
  • individuals with certain health conditions
  • Those who receive a carer’s allowance or are the main carer for an older or disabled individual who may be at risk if you get sick.
  • Those who live with someone who is more likely to suffer from infections (such as someone who has HIV, has had a transplant or is receiving certain treatments for cancer, lupus or rheumatoid arthritis)

Where can you receive flu and Covid-19 booster vaccinations?

Flu vaccines are available for those eligible via your GP surgery as well as local pharmacies or through your midwifery service if you are pregnant.

Covid-19 boosters will be offered to those eligible after 6 months from your 2nd dose. Booster vaccines are available to book online at a vaccination centre or pharmacy, at a walk-in vaccination site or via your own GP’s vaccination site. For Moreton and Meols PCN patients will be invited to our PCN vaccination site at Moreton Cross Group Practice.

Our PCN vaccination team are currently contacting those who are 6 months from their 2nd dose to invite for a Covid-19 booster vaccination.
